Building a Three-Sided SEL Marketplace
How Noreaster Group designed and built Kind Mind Education’s Ruby on Rails platform, connecting administrators, teachers, and students around a shared social-emotional learning curriculum.
About Kind Mind Education
Kind Mind Education builds mindfulness and social-emotional learning (SEL) curricula that help educators foster emotional intelligence and resilience in their students.
Their programs had proven their impact in person, but scaling that impact meant moving beyond workshops and static materials to a real digital platform. Kind Mind brought that vision to Noreaster to design and build.

The Challenge
Kind Mind envisioned a system where administrators could publish curriculum, teachers could deliver it in their classrooms, and students could benefit from consistent, aligned lessons: three distinct users, all needing to work off the same underlying content.
— No digital platform existed to scale curriculum delivery beyond in-person workshops and static materials
— Needed distinct, purpose-built experiences for administrators, teachers, and students within one system
— Teachers needed a way to enroll in professional development modules and have their credit hours tracked automatically
— The interface had to be simple enough for educators of every technical comfort level to use with confidence
— The architecture needed to support growth as Kind Mind onboarded schools and districts nationwide
They needed a technical partner who could translate an educational model into a scalable, intuitive marketplace, not just a piece of custom software.
Our Approach
Noreaster worked as Kind Mind’s product and engineering team, moving through a deliberately staged process built to reduce risk before investing in full-scale development.
01
Discovery & Problem Solving
Worked with Kind Mind’s team to translate their educational model into a clear product plan, aligning on the three core users the platform needed to serve: administrators, teachers, and students.
02
Wireframing & Validation
Used low-fidelity wireframes to test curriculum management and enrollment flows with the Kind Mind team before committing to full design and development, keeping early iterations fast and cheap.
03
Marketplace & Data Architecture
Designed the underlying Rails and PostgreSQL data model to support a three-sided marketplace: curriculum modules published by administrators, enrolled in and delivered by teachers, and received by students.
04
MVP Development
Built the platform in Ruby on Rails with a Tailwind CSS front end, prioritizing the curriculum management system and the teacher-facing enrollment and delivery flows first.
05
Credit Tracking & Reporting
Layered in automated tracking and reporting so teachers could earn and monitor professional development credits directly through the platform as they completed and taught Kind Mind programs.
06
QA, Launch & Iterate
Tested thoroughly ahead of launch, then continued shipping improvements based on real usage, with Noreaster remaining engaged as Kind Mind’s ongoing product and engineering partner.
What We Built
The result is a Rails application built around a three-sided marketplace, live today at app.kindmindeducation.com:
Three-sided marketplace
admins, teachers & students
Automated credit tracking
PD credits, tracked & reported
Built for scale
Rails · Tailwind · PostgreSQL
Administrators publish curriculum modules directly into the platform. Teachers browse, enroll in, and deliver that curriculum in their classrooms, with their professional development credit hours tracked automatically along the way. Students benefit from consistent, aligned lessons on the other end. Noreaster continues to support the platform through an ongoing product retainer, shipping improvements as real classroom usage surfaces new needs.
